When you mention Santa Cruz, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the Boardwalk. While I like the Boardwalk and the whole surfer-watching at the beach, I recently discover my favorite place in Santa Cruz. It’s a tiny place but I think it is very cool & mysterious. It’s called the Mystery Spot.
It is listed as one of California’s Historical Landmark.
So the Mystery Spot is a gravity hill where you seem to be standing on an angle even though you are standing straight. Even the ball seems to be rolling uphill instead of downhill.
Here’s the little hut where it happens. The house looks tilted while the tour guide is actually standing straight.
“Spiderman” hanging on the wall!! The kids had a blast posing for all the “spiderman & superman” photos!! 😛
See how everyone’s hanging on the the handlebar? It was because we were all kinda dizzy coming out of the house. Even though we were all standing straight, the illusion of being crooked was affected us. In fact, one kid in the tour group actually had to sit outside because he felt car-sick.
No one can really explain why this happens but there are many theories including UFOs and earthquake faults and everything else in between. No one knows the truth and it doesn’t matter. Maybe it is just pure illusion. Whatever the reason, it is just fun to visit. This place does get busy during weekends and holidays, so make your reservations online before you go to ensure that you get a spot on the tour. It costs $6 per person and parking is $5 per vehicle.
