Japan Day 5: Kyoto / Osaka / Nara

On day 5, we checked out early from Hotel Granvia Tokyo and took the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka Station. But before checking out, we forwarded our 2 big luggages to our hotel in Fukuoka – Hotel Nikko Fukuoka. We only brought along one carry-on suitcase to Osaka since we were only staying 1 night and it is a lot easier traveling on the trains without huge luggages.

From Kyoto Station to Shin-Osaka Station:
 Train: Shinkansen Hikari
Costs: ¥2610 per adult & ¥1305 per child  *FREE if you have the Japan Rail Pass
 Travel Time: About 14 minutes

Kyoto Osaka Bullet Train
At Shin-Osaka Station, we had to hop onto a local train.

From Shin-Osaka Station to Namba (Nankai) Station:
Train: Osaka City Subway Midosuji Line
Costs: ¥280 per adult & ¥140 per child
 Travel Time: About 15 minutes

From Namba Station, we headed to our hotel – Swissotel Nankai Osaka which is located right above Namba Station. Since it was too early to check in, they let us store our luggage there. So we did and headed off to our next destination – Nara.

From Osaka Namba Station to Kintetsu Nara Station:
Train: Kintetsu Nara Line Rapid Exp
Costs: ¥560 per adult & ¥280 per child
 Travel Time: About 40 minutes

From Nara Station, it is a short walking distance to Nara Deer Park and the grounds of Todaiji Temple. This is definitely a must visit especially with kids. They will love feeding the deers that roam freely although you have to be a little careful of some overly-aggressive deers.

On our way back, instead of leaving from Kintetsu Nara Station, we walked an extra 15 minutes to the Nara Station (for JR trains) to get to our next destination. As per CJ’s request, the next destination is the Pokemon Center Osaka!

From Nara Station to Osaka Station:
 Train: JR Yamatoji Rapid Service
Costs: ¥800 per adult & ¥400 per child *FREE if you have the Japan Rail Pass
 Travel Time: About 51 minutes

After lots of oohing and aahing at the Pokemon Center, we headed back to the hotel.

From  Umeda Osaka Station to Namba Subway Station:
Train: Osaka City Subway Midosuji Line
Costs: ¥240 per adult & ¥120 per child
 Travel Time: About 9 minutes

After checking in, picked up our luggage from the hotel storage, we were out the door again and walked 10 minutes to Dotonburi. Dotonbori is a food haven as well as shopping haven. We spend a few hours in Dotonburi just pigging out and wishing we had six stomachs!! Such a fun place with lots of elaborate shop ads like the ones below.
